As of October 20, 2024, Nebraska farmers had 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture was rated 47% very short, 39% short, 14% adequate, and 0% surplus. Subsoil moisture conditions were similar, with 41% very short, 39% short, 20% adequate, and 0% surplus.
Field Crops Report:
Corn maturity reached 98%, close to last year’s 99% and the five-year average of 97%. The corn harvest was ahead of schedule at 63%, compared to 57% last year and the 51% average.
Soybean harvest progressed well, reaching 85%, surpassing last year’s 79% and the five-year average of 80%
Winter wheat conditions were rated as 5% very poor, 19% poor, 36% fair, 34% good, and 6% excellent. Winter wheat emergence was behind schedule at 77%, compared to 88% last year and the 82% average.
The Sorghum condition was generally positive, with 1% very poor, 4% poor, 19% fair, 48% good, and 28% excellent. Sorghum maturity reached 97%, near last year’s 98% and the 95% average. The Sorghum harvest stood at 57%, ahead of last year and the five-year average, both at 49%.
Dry edible beans harvest was nearly complete at 93%, close to last year’s 89% and the five-year average of 91%.
Pasture and Range Report:
Pasture and range conditions were reported as 37% very poor, 20% poor, 28% fair, 14% good, and 1% excellent. Moisture conditions remain challenging across Nebraska as harvests progress.
