Nebraska boosts local meat processing with new grants

By Scout Nelson

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) has taken a significant step to enhance the meat processing industry in the state by awarding grants totaling over $5.19 million.

This funding, sourced from Nebraska’s allocation of the American Rescue Plan Act federal funds, is part of the Independent Processor Assistance Program (IPAP) and aims to support the growth and efficiency of local meat processing facilities.

Out of 76 meat processing facilities selected for the IPAP grants, 26 are first-time recipients. The grants are designed to aid facilities that are looking to improve or expand their operations.

"Increased capacity adds value to Nebraska’s meat products today and strengthens the meat processing industry for tomorrow," said NDA Director Sherry Vinton.

To qualify for the grants, facilities had to meet specific criteria including operational status as either a USDA-FSIS facility or a federally regulated custom-exempt slaughter and processing facility.

These facilities must be domiciled and registered in Nebraska, have sales revenue of less than $2.5 million, and employ fewer than 25 people.

The first round of IPAP funding in September 2022 dispersed approximately $4.75 million. The current funding round supports new facilities and provides additional resources to 50 facilities that benefited previously.

This initiative underscores Nebraska’s commitment to fostering a robust local meat processing sector, which is vital for the state’s economic health and growth.
