The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Soil Health Team celebrated its first anniversary in 2023, showcasing its commitment to sustainable farming practices and enhancing soil health knowledge across Nebraska. This year marked a significant milestone in fostering healthy and productive agricultural ecosystems.
The team organized a diverse range of events, including a conference, soil health schools, field days, a cover crops economics workshop, and a webinar on manure's impact on soil health.
These events were held across various Nebraska locations such as Bridgeport, North Platte, Hastings, Ithaca, Haskell, and Lincoln, drawing over 540 attendees, a majority of whom were from Nebraska. The objective was to create a platform for knowledge exchange and engagement among agricultural communities.
Feedback from the events indicated high satisfaction and significant knowledge gains among participants. 43% of producer attendees reported implementing soil health practices influenced by the events.
The programs covered various topics, such as soil health assessment and sustainable farming practices, delivered through keynote presentations, research talks, and interactive sessions.
The UNL Soil Health Team plans to incorporate interactive elements in future events, exploring topics like carbon sequestration, nutrient conservation, and water quality. They aim to provide practical training on soil health monitoring and transitioning to organic farming.
